    Minimal upon Minimal

How an award winning Designer from Spain aims to reinterpret Japanese Retail Spaces

In the ever-evolving landscape of global design, minimalism has stood as a resilient and revered aesthetic. Its principles of simplicity, functionality, and the stripping away of the superfluous have found a home in diverse cultures, each interpreting its core tenets through a unique lens. From the sun-drenched shores of the Mediterranean to the tranquil temples of Japan, minimalism speaks a universal language, albeit with distinct and fascinating dialects. This exploration delves into the heart of this design philosophy, charting a course from Spain to Japan, led by the visionary work of award-winning designer Juan David Martínez Jofre and his Minimal Studio. This is not merely a comparative study, but a pitch—a bold proposition to the discerning retail giants of Japan to embrace a new, cross-cultural minimalism that promises to revitalize their spaces and captivate a new generation of consumers. The story of Spanish minimalism is one of warmth, texture, and a deep-seated connection to the natural world. It is a minimalism that is not afraid to embrace earthy tones, handcrafted details, and a certain rustic elegance. In contrast, Japanese minimalism, deeply rooted in Zen philosophy, finds its expression in the concepts of ‘ma’ (negative space), ‘wabi-sabi’ (the beauty of imperfection), and a profound reverence for tranquility. While both approaches champion simplicity, their emotional resonance and material expression can be worlds apart. It is within this fascinating dialogue between two distinct minimalist traditions that a compelling opportunity for innovation arises. This article will argue that the future of retail design in Japan lies not in a purist adherence to its own celebrated aesthetic, but in a daring and thoughtful fusion with an outside perspective. It is a vision of "Minimal upon Minimal," where the clean lines of Spanish design meet the serene spirit of Japan, creating a retail experience that is at once familiar and refreshingly new.

The Spanish Maestro of Minimalism: The Story of Juan David Martínez Jofre and Minimal StudioAt the helm of this design revolution is Juan David Martínez Jofre, the CEO and founder of Minimal Studio, a multidisciplinary design firm based in Spain. Jofre, a name now synonymous with a string of prestigious accolades, including the Luxury Lifestyle Awards and recognition from the International Design Awards and iF Design, has carved a niche for himself by elevating the principles of minimalism to an art form. His studio’s philosophy is elegantly simple: to raise the execution of construction, design, and decoration to a unified level of excellence. This holistic approach, which integrates architects, engineers, and interior designers, has resulted in a portfolio of projects that are both breathtakingly beautiful and impeccably functional.Minimal Studio’s work is characterized by a set of recurring yet adaptable principles. Clean lines and simple shapes form the backbone of their designs, creating a sense of order and clarity. Furniture is chosen for its functionality and sculptural quality, never for mere ornamentation. The color palette is invariably light and neutral, a canvas upon which the interplay of light and shadow can perform its magic. Large windows are a signature element, flooding spaces with natural light and blurring the boundaries between inside and out. But perhaps the most defining characteristic of Minimal Studio's work is its masterful use of natural materials. Wood, stone, and other organic elements are integrated harmoniously into each project, creating a sense of warmth and tactility that is often absent in more austere interpretations of minimalism. This is a minimalism that is meant to be touched, to be experienced with all the senses. One of Minimal Studio’s award-winning projects, "Monolith," serves as a perfect embodiment of their design ethos. A stunning architectural achievement sculpted from white concrete, Monolith blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings. The starkness of the concrete is softened by the use of noble materials like walnut and natural stone. A handcrafted helical staircase becomes a functional work of art, while motorized glass walls create a fluid connection between the interior and the verdant exterior. Here, indirect lighting is used not to illuminate the space in a conventional sense, but to emphasize the textures of the natural materials, to accentuate the architecture without overwhelming it. This is not just a house; it is a living sculpture, a testament to the power of a design philosophy that finds its strength in simplicity and its soul in nature.Minimalism in Dialogue: A Tale of Two Cultures - Spanish and Japanese AestheticsTo understand the transformative potential of Minimal Studio’s work in a Japanese context, it is crucial to first appreciate the subtle yet significant differences between Spanish and Japanese minimalism. While both traditions share a common ground in their rejection of clutter and their focus on essentialism, their divergent cultural and philosophical roots have led them down different aesthetic paths.Spanish minimalism, as exemplified by the work of Minimal Studio, is a deeply sensual and earthy interpretation of the aesthetic. It is a minimalism that is rooted in the Mediterranean way of life—a life lived in close connection to the sun, the sea, and the land. This is reflected in the material palette, which favors warm woods, rustic stone, and tactile fabrics like linen and cotton. The color palette, while predominantly neutral, is often punctuated by earthy tones of terracotta, saffron, and olive green. There is a celebration of craftsmanship, of the human hand in the making of things. While clean lines and uncluttered spaces are paramount, there is also a sense of warmth and invitation, a feeling that these are spaces designed for living, for gathering, for human connection.Japanese minimalism, on the other hand, is a more introspective and philosophical affair. It is profoundly influenced by the principles of Zen Buddhism, which emphasize simplicity, mindfulness, and the beauty of emptiness. The concept of ‘ma’, or negative space, is central to Japanese design. It is the belief that the empty space between objects is just as important as the objects themselves, for it is in this void that the imagination can roam and a sense of tranquility can be found. Another key principle is ‘wabi-sabi’, the appreciation of imperfection and transience. In a world obsessed with flawless perfection, wabi-sabi finds beauty in the cracks of a ceramic bowl, the weathered patina of a wooden beam, the asymmetry of a hand-thrown vase. It is a celebration of the natural cycle of growth and decay, a reminder that beauty can be found in the humble, the modest, and the unadorned. The Japanese retail landscape has long been a showcase for these design principles. From the serene and uncluttered interiors of Muji to the artfully curated spaces of Issey Miyake, Japanese retail design has mastered the art of creating a sense of calm and contemplation. However, as the retail world becomes increasingly globalized and consumer tastes evolve, there is a growing danger of aesthetic stagnation. The very qualities that have made Japanese retail design so successful—its purity, its restraint, its unwavering commitment to a single aesthetic vision—could also become its greatest liability. In a world that craves novelty and experience, is there a risk that Japanese retail spaces, in their quiet perfection, might begin to feel a little too predictable?

Reimagining Japanese Retail: A Pitch for a New Minimalist VisionThis is where the transformative potential of a cross-cultural design dialogue comes into play. By inviting a Spanish design studio like Minimal Studio to reinterpret Japanese retail spaces, Japanese brands have a unique opportunity to inject a new sense of vitality and excitement into their stores, without betraying the core principles of their own aesthetic heritage. The result would not be a jarring clash of cultures, but a subtle and sophisticated fusion—a new form of minimalism that is at once deeply respectful of Japanese tradition and refreshingly contemporary.Imagine a flagship store in the heart of Tokyo, a space that has been reimagined by Minimal Studio. The foundational principles of Japanese minimalism would still be present—the emphasis on natural light, the uncluttered layout, the reverence for materials. However, these elements would be filtered through a Spanish sensibility. The color palette might be expanded to include warmer, earthier tones. The materials might include not just the traditional Japanese woods of cedar and cypress, but also the more rustic and textured woods of the Mediterranean. The furniture, while still minimalist in form, might have a more sculptural and inviting quality. The result would be a space that feels both familiar and new. For the Japanese consumer, it would be a subtle yet significant departure from the expected, a space that feels at once serene and sensual, tranquil and tactile. For the international visitor, it would be a powerful and memorable expression of a new global minimalism, a testament to the creative possibilities that arise when two great design traditions come together. The Power of the Pop-Up and Beyond: Tangible Strategies for TransformationThe reinterpretation of Japanese retail spaces by Minimal Studio need not be an all-or-nothing proposition. The journey can begin with a series of smaller, more experimental interventions, allowing Japanese brands to test the waters and gauge consumer response.A pop-up store, for instance, would be the perfect vehicle for introducing this new cross-cultural minimalism to the Japanese market. Imagine a temporary installation in a department store or a gallery space, a jewel-box of a store that showcases a single product line in a setting that is pure Minimal Studio. This would be a low-risk, high-impact way to generate buzz and create a sense of occasion. The pop-up could be a multi-sensory experience, incorporating not just visual design elements but also sound, scent, and touch. The goal would be to create a space that is not just a place to shop, but a destination in itself, a place that people will want to visit, to photograph, to share on social media.Beyond the pop-up, there are a host of other opportunities for collaboration. Minimal Studio could be commissioned to design a specific section of a larger store, to create a unique in-store experience for a product launch, or to design a temporary installation for a special event. These smaller projects would serve as stepping stones to a more comprehensive and long-term partnership, a partnership that could ultimately culminate in the complete redesign of a flagship store. The pitch to Japanese retailers is simple: in a world of ever-increasing competition and ever-more-discerning consumers, the brands that will succeed are the ones that are willing to take risks, to innovate, to challenge the status quo. By embracing a new, cross-cultural minimalism, by inviting an outside perspective into their world, Japanese brands have a unique opportunity to not just stay relevant, but to once again lead the way in the world of retail design.ConclusionThe dialogue between Spanish and Japanese minimalism is a conversation that is long overdue. It is a conversation that has the potential to create a new and exciting chapter in the story of global design. Juan David Martínez Jofre and Minimal Studio stand at the forefront of this movement, ready to bring their unique vision of a warm, sensual, and deeply human minimalism to the shores of Japan. The result, we believe, will be a retail experience that is not just beautiful, but also meaningful, memorable, and utterly transformative. The time for "Minimal upon Minimal" is now.

    Case Study: Numa Beach

Where Timeless Design Meets Mediterranean Soul

"Obsession with happiness" — the Japanese meaning of "Numa" — became more than just a name for this transformative beach club project. It became the design philosophy that would elevate a coastal venue into an experience that guests return to year after year.---The Vision: Creating Harmony with NatureWhen Minimal Studio was approached to design Numa Beach, the challenge was clear: how do you create a beach club that feels both spectacular and serene, that can transition from peaceful daytime retreat to vibrant evening destination, all while honoring the natural beauty of Mallorca's coastline? The answer lay not in competing with nature, but in becoming an extension of it.Design Philosophy: Less is Eternally MoreWhile many beach clubs chase the latest trends with bold colors and flashy materials, Minimal Studio took a radically different approach. The design team, led by J. David M. Jofre, understood that true luxury lies in restraint — in creating spaces that feel effortless and inevitable. The neutral chromatic palette wasn't just an aesthetic choice; it was a strategic decision to ensure the space would never feel dated. By using stone, wood, and sand tones, the design creates what the team calls "visual neatness" — a clean, uncluttered environment where guests can focus on what matters: connection, relaxation, and the endless Mediterranean horizon.

The Genius in the DetailsSeamless Integration
The most striking design decision was the use of actual sea sand for the joints between different pavements. This seemingly simple detail creates a total visual and tactile connection with the beach environment, making the transition from natural shore to designed space virtually invisible. Guests don't feel they're entering a building — they feel they're discovering a naturally evolved space.
    Adaptive Lighting Strategy
Understanding that a beach club must work from sunrise to sunset, the lighting system was designed to advance and adapt to the specific solar conditions of each moment. This isn't just functional lighting — it's atmospheric engineering that maintains the space's tranquil character throughout the day while preparing for evening transformation.
    Multi-Functional Environments
Rather than creating separate, disconnected spaces, Minimal Studio developed different functional environments that maintain visual and aesthetic connection throughout the establishment. The result is a space that encompasses multiple concepts within one cohesive vision:
Tranquil Seafront Areas: Designed for absolute rest and contemplation, with unobstructed sea views
    - Dynamic Social Zones: Including an amphitheater that transforms into a dance floor for evening events
    - Cultural Spaces: A relaxation room that doubles as an art gallery, proving that beach clubs can be both leisurely and intellectually engaging
The Creative Process: Thoughtful InnovationThe design process began with deep observation of the site's natural rhythms — how light moves across the space, where guests naturally gravitate, how the sea breeze flows through the area. This environmental analysis informed every design decision, from the placement of seating areas to the selection of materials that would age beautifully under Mediterranean sun and salt air.One of the most imaginative elements is the access tunnel to the bathrooms, which transforms a purely functional requirement into a "conceptual and imaginative game." This attention to even the most utilitarian spaces demonstrates Minimal Studio's commitment to creating experiences at every touchpoint.

The Business Impact: Design as InvestmentThe success of Numa Beach proves that thoughtful design is not an expense — it's a multiplier. By creating a space that feels timeless rather than trendy, the venue has established itself as a destination that attracts guests season after season. The neutral palette and natural materials ensure the space will never look outdated, while the flexible programming allows for diverse revenue streams throughout the day.The design's connection to its natural environment also creates what hospitality professionals call "Instagram-ability" without feeling artificial. Guests naturally want to photograph and share the space because it feels authentic and beautiful, not because it's trying to be viral.Lessons for Industry LeadersNuma Beach demonstrates several key principles that smart hospitality owners should consider:Environmental Harmony Over Statement Making: Rather than creating a space that demands attention, Numa Beach allows the natural beauty of its location to shine while providing the perfect framework for enjoying it.Flexible Programming Through Design: The various functional zones prove that good design can create multiple revenue opportunities within a single space without compromising aesthetic coherence.Material Truth: Using authentic materials like sea sand and natural stone creates an honesty in the space that guests can feel, even if they can't articulate why the venue feels so comfortable.Lighting as Experience Design: The adaptive lighting system shows how technical solutions can enhance rather than interrupt the natural experience.Beyond the Beach: Principles That TravelWhile Numa Beach is specifically designed for its coastal location, the principles demonstrated here apply to any hospitality venue:- Restraint as luxury: Sometimes the most powerful design move is knowing what not to do
    - Environmental integration: Great venues feel like they belong in their location
    - Flexible functionality: Spaces should work as hard as your staff
    - Authentic materiality: Real materials create real connections with guests

The Minimal Studio DifferenceNuma Beach represents more than just successful design — it demonstrates how the right design partner can transform a business vision into a lasting asset. The project showcases Minimal Studio's ability to balance aesthetic sophistication with operational practicality, creating spaces that are both beautiful and profitable. For bar owners, restaurateurs, and hoteliers looking to create their own timeless venues, Numa Beach offers a masterclass in how thoughtful design can elevate a concept into an institution. It proves that in an industry often obsessed with the next big thing, the most successful approach might just be getting the fundamentals perfectly right.---The success of projects like Numa Beach demonstrates why leading hospitality professionals choose to invest in design partnerships that prioritize longevity over trends. When every detail is considered and every choice serves both aesthetic and operational goals, the result is more than a venue — it's a destination that defines its market.Ready to Create Your Own Timeless Venue? The principles that made Numa Beach a standout success — environmental harmony, flexible functionality, authentic materiality, and strategic restraint — can be adapted to transform any hospitality concept into a lasting destination.Whether you're planning a beach club, urban restaurant, boutique hotel, or cocktail bar, the question isn't whether you can afford great design. It's whether you can afford not to invest in it.Minimal Studio's approach goes beyond aesthetics. We create spaces that work as business assets, generating return on investment through increased guest loyalty, operational efficiency, and brand differentiation. Every project begins with understanding your vision, your market, and your operational needs — then translating those insights into spaces that feel both inevitable and extraordinary.Your venue deserves the same thoughtful attention that made Numa Beach a destination worth returning to, season after season. Our consultation process is designed to explore how strategic design can elevate your specific project, whether you're working with a beachfront property, an urban corner, or anything in between. Together, we'll uncover the unique story your space wants to tell — and the design strategy that will help it tell that story for decades to come.

    The Architecture of Desire:
How David of Minimal Studio Turns Space into Experience

Walk into a bar, a boutique hotel, or a restaurant designed by Minimal Studio, and you immediately sense something different. It’s not just the sleek surfaces, the dramatic play of light and shadow, or the clean geometry of form. It’s a feeling — subtle yet powerful — that the space is speaking directly to you. That sense of atmosphere doesn’t happen by chance. It is the work of David, the founder and creative force behind Minimal Studio, who has quietly built a reputation as one of Europe’s most intriguing design minds for hospitality, retail, and brand collaborations. His projects don’t just look beautiful — they create experiences that linger in memory long after a guest has left.Minimal Studio has become a destination for hoteliers, restaurateurs, and forward-thinking brands who want something beyond surface-level style. They want resonance. They want design that captures imagination, sparks emotion, and makes people feel something. From Construction to CreationDavid’s career began not with glossy renderings but with the tactile, grounded reality of construction. That foundation matters. His understanding of materiality, of how spaces actually come together in real life, allows him to design with both imagination and precision.Unlike designers who focus only on the conceptual, David bridges vision and execution. His projects aren’t trapped in mood boards — they are fully realized atmospheres, born from a rare ability to move between philosophy and practicality with ease. This dual perspective has made Minimal Studio’s work stand out in a crowded market. For hospitality brands, where every detail impacts the guest experience, this balance between artistry and pragmatism is not just valuable — it’s essential.

The Hospitality ConnectionHospitality is an industry built on memory. Guests might come for the amenities, the cocktails, or the convenience, but what keeps them returning — what transforms a hotel or restaurant into a destination — is how the place made them feel.David understands this intuitively. His work is less about “designing rooms” and more about designing moments. The moment when a guest enters the lobby and feels a sense of calm curiosity. The moment when a cocktail is placed on a bar that feels like sculpture. The moment when a restaurant’s lighting shifts from day to night, subtly cueing a new mood.“Guests don’t just want luxury. They want memory.”For hoteliers, restaurateurs, and bar owners, these memories are the new currency of loyalty. Minimal Studio’s projects excel at creating them.

Beyond Hospitality: Collaborating with BrandsWhile hospitality is a natural canvas for David’s vision, brands are also increasingly turning to Minimal Studio to create retail and experiential spaces that break convention. These collaborations move past traditional “store design.” Instead, they build what can only be called brand worlds — immersive environments where architecture, lighting, material, and emotion all reinforce the essence of the label. In an era where customers crave more than transactions, these spaces become critical touchpoints. They communicate values without words, aspiration without slogans. They allow people to step into what a brand stands for. This is where Minimal Studio’s philosophy resonates most powerfully: creating spaces that are not just containers for activity but catalysts for connection.A Mediterranean Lens on Global DesignThough David’s work engages with international influences, there’s a distinctly Mediterranean sensibility running through Minimal Studio. Warmth, material honesty, and a deep respect for the natural landscape infuse his projects. This is what makes his work globally relevant yet locally authentic. A Minimal Studio project in Mallorca feels like it belongs to the island — not as a pastiche of tradition, but as a fresh interpretation that honors context while speaking a universal design language. For global brands, this grounding in place adds a rare dimension: the ability to create spaces that are both cosmopolitan and rooted, aspirational yet approachable.

The Future of Design in HospitalityAs the hospitality industry grapples with new challenges — digital booking platforms, shifting consumer expectations, and the ever-present influence of social media — design has become more important than ever.Guests no longer view hotels or restaurants as simple service providers. They see them as experiences, as stages for their own stories. Spaces that don’t rise to this challenge risk fading into irrelevance.David’s Minimal Studio offers a blueprint for the future: design that is at once timeless and adaptive, minimalist yet emotional, globally fluent yet locally tuned.“Design is not decoration — it is the architecture of desire.”For hoteliers, bar owners, and brands, working with David means tapping into this philosophy — creating not just spaces that look good, but spaces that matter.Closing ThoughtsMinimal Studio isn’t just designing walls, floors, and ceilings. It’s designing feelings, atmospheres, and memories. David’s vision challenges us to see space not as background but as experience, not as function but as narrative. For those in hospitality and branding, the choice is clear. In an industry where impressions are fleeting, David creates the rarest of all luxuries: spaces that endure in memory. That is the true architecture of desire.

The Inclined Stroke of the Mediterranean
Set into a northern Mallorcan hillside, Oblique House is defined by one decisive diagonal roof plane that frames panoramic bay views and animates the sky–structure relationship.
